Independent VPN comparison · QC-based

Surfshark vs CyberGhost:
compare real conditions.

Surfshark and CyberGhost are both measured with WireGuard UDP here. Compare their shared exits and the range of results, rather than a single peak number. Setup can also be a deciding factor: Surfshark documents manual WireGuard configuration, while CyberGhost’s guide describes app support and rules out manual configuration.

Personalised performance comparison

Which VPN is better for your priorities?

Choose a test source and window here; the benchmark below uses exactly the same worker, timeframe and QC-matched exits. Pick a use case, or set your own weights. This is a pair-relative performance comparison—not a global VPN rating.

Balanced combines measured throughput, consistency and network responsiveness when those metrics are available.

Factors included in your ranking

Only actually measured, matched factors will appear here.

What should you prioritise?

Streaming (HD / 4K)

Download throughput and consistent retained speed matter for avoiding buffering. Streaming-service access is not measured here.

Online gaming

Low latency reduces response delay, low jitter helps keep timing stable, and packet loss helps avoid interruptions. Without measured latency, we do not name a gaming winner.

Big downloads

Higher download Mbps and retained speed matter most when transferring large files. It does not predict every website or server.

Video calls / remote work

Low latency, low jitter, low packet loss and enough upload bandwidth can improve call quality. An unavailable factor is never assumed to be good.

Browsing

Fast response times help sites feel snappy; sustained throughput matters less for basic pages. Browsing results are limited when ping is not measured.

Balanced / custom

Combine priorities for your own use. A score is calculated only from the selected worker, timeframe and eligible shared exit measurements.

How scoring works: each VPN is compared against the other on identical QC-eligible exits for each available metric. Higher download/upload/retention and lower latency/jitter/loss score better. Every eligible exit receives equal weight. Pair-relative scores sum to 100; a gap below 2 points is reported as too close. These scores are not independent quality ratings or a statistical confidence interval. Features, security, pricing, geo-unblocking and privacy audits are not measured in this calculation.

Features worth checking before you choose

Surfshark and CyberGhost offer different applications, privacy choices and support options. Check platform features, subscription terms and independent security evidence directly with each provider; they are not scored by the performance benchmark.

Look beyond the shared WireGuard label

Surfshark: Surfshark supports WireGuard in its apps and through manual configuration. These results cover the tested setup, not every supported protocol. Provider documentation.

CyberGhost: CyberGhost supports WireGuard in its apps. Its support guide says manual WireGuard configuration is unavailable, so check your intended device before choosing. Provider documentation.

03 / Reading evidence

How we keep the comparison fair

We require a READY result, a shared eligible exit, and at least three quality-accepted samples for each provider at that exit. Missing exits do not count as zero speed. Some worker and time-window combinations are withheld because coverage is insufficient.

Speed kept (%) compares measured download performance with a clean baseline; raw download Mbps is also shown when supplied. Results can differ between worker countries and over time. See the testing methodology for limitations.

04 / Frequently asked questions

Surfshark vs CyberGhost — FAQs

Which setup question matters for a router or unsupported device?

Check whether you need a manual configuration file or can use a supported app. The linked provider guides describe different WireGuard setup options; verify your exact device before buying.

Which VPN is faster for downloads?

Switch to Large downloads in Overall Ranking, then choose a worker and time window. Only QC-ready tests of shared VPN exits are scored, and results depend on the route.

Which is better for gaming?

Gaming requires matched latency readings. If ping and jitter are not available on both sides, this page does not name a gaming winner.

Which VPN protocols are being tested?

Surfshark uses WireGuard UDP; CyberGhost uses WireGuard UDP. These are distinct protocol configurations measured from the same worker to matched exit countries.

Does this prove streaming access or privacy?

No. Speed tests cannot verify streaming-service unblocking, privacy policies or security audits. Weigh those separately before purchasing.

Why are some results unavailable?

We require at least three accepted samples per provider on each of three common VPN exits. Where matching evidence is insufficient, no score is invented.
