Lightway UDP
— Speed retentionCoverage is checked before a score is shown
Both brands are familiar names, but choosing between them is not just about a logo or a promised top speed. Your devices, nearest server, trust requirements and renewal price will shape the answer.
Clearly labeled evidence • No invented live measurements

NordVPN and ExpressVPN should be compared on verified current features, available protocols, device support, privacy evidence, measured route quality and your own subscription terms. Neither deserves an across-the-board win without context.
Read the method, check the limits, then use your own connection to confirm the result.
This page answers a narrower question than a full VPN review: how the two fastest mainstream protocols perform in our benchmark network. It does not score subscription price, streaming access, privacy features or app design. For provider-wide benchmark profiles, see NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
This table is not a substitute for the live matched-exit comparison above. It shows published country snapshots where both protocols have data. The live comparison stays stricter: one source, shared exits and equal exit weighting.

Both VPNs are tested from the same test location.
Only exit countries represented on both sides can qualify.
Each qualifying destination contributes one retention observation.
This remains an observational same-window comparison rather than a strictly simultaneous paired campaign.
Different protocols and network routes can produce different results on the same device. The table separates product-level context from measurements we have not yet published, rather than treating promotional claims as benchmarks.

Primary sources: NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Prices, plans and features can change. No performance winner is declared until comparable dated test runs are published. See our speed-test method.
NordVPN offers its NordLynx approach based on WireGuard, while ExpressVPN has developed Lightway. Both providers also have apps with changing platform-specific features. Check the exact devices and operating systems you use rather than assuming that every feature exists everywhere.
Protocol design can matter for efficiency and reconnection, but the route and server often dominate actual results. Compare protocols under the same network conditions.
Check supported device versions
Ask whether split tunneling is needed
Test reconnection on your normal network
A useful head-to-head test uses the same starting connection, similar geographic endpoints and repeated runs. Look at latency and variability as well as throughput. Note how much of a difference survives across more than one test window.
Until approved benchmark rows are attached, this comparison intentionally has no fabricated speed table or declared winner. Consult rankings when live results are audited.
Same country and time window
Repeated download, upload and latency samples
Clear testing dates and missing data
Read both providers’ current privacy documentation and any independent verification materials. An audit claim only applies to the system and period that the auditor examined.
Consider account metadata and how you use signed-in apps or websites. VPN encryption does not erase the information you voluntarily share with third parties.
Review current published audits
Check applicable jurisdiction and policies
Separate marketing from what was independently reviewed
Discount offers change often and renewals can be much more expensive than an introductory term. Compare the same duration, currency, tax treatment and refund rules at checkout.
If you are undecided, test two shortlisted providers in your actual location instead of treating a global comparison as a guarantee.
Compare true renewal terms
Verify customer-support channel
Use your own baseline tests
There is no universal answer. Current matched measurements, location and protocol are needed.
That depends on the specific policies and independently verified evidence you consider most important.
No. Check renewal terms and whether the service is reliable on your devices.
