VPN ACTIVITY GUIDE · EVIDENCE BEFORE A VERDICT

VPN for streaming. Look for steady playback.

A stream needs enough sustained download capacity to keep playing. A single high speed result can look impressive while hiding slower periods. Start with the quality you watch, then examine consistency on the route you expect to use.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Performance and access are different checks

These benchmarks measure network performance. They do not establish that a VPN can access a particular streaming service, region, title or subscription catalogue.

WHAT MATTERS

Three checks for streaming

Download: enough room for playback

Compare measured Mbps with the service’s current guidance for your playback quality. Leave room for other people and devices sharing the connection. Your own test is more relevant than a distant lab peak.

Consistency: look beyond the median

Read the lower part of the observed range as well as the median. P10 describes the lower end of the measured distribution; it is not a guaranteed minimum speed for every stream.

Retention: keep the baseline visible

Retention describes how much of the test baseline speed remained. A high retention percentage on a slow baseline can still mean limited Mbps. Read the percentage and absolute speed together.

A PRACTICAL ROUTINE

Make the test match your day

Keep notes about the device, source, VPN exit and reporting window so you can explain why two results differ.

1. Start with the service and quality

Check the streaming service’s current speed guidance and your plan’s playback limits. Netflix currently recommends a stable connection of 15 Mbps or higher for 4K; that is service guidance, not our VPN pass/fail score.

2. Compare shared exits

Use the same lab source and time window for both VPNs. Select Streaming in a pair comparison and inspect the exit coverage. A pooled result from unrelated countries can hide the route you care about.

3. Check the actual viewing session

Try the device, app and network you normally use. Watch for buffering and quality drops over a session, not just at startup. Check service availability separately and follow the service’s applicable terms.

AVOID THE WRONG CONCLUSION

Does a fast benchmark prove Netflix access?

No. A throughput test does not check login, regional availability or playback rights. Access can vary by service and change over time. This guide makes no verified unblocking claims and does not award a streaming-access winner.

COMPARE OBSERVED SETUPS

Choose a pair, then select Streaming

Open a comparison and choose Streaming in the activity controls. These are research links, not a ranking or a recommendation to buy.

NordVPN vs ExpressVPN

Keep the same source, time window and eligible shared VPN exits. Read missing-metric notices before interpreting a lead.

ExpressVPN vs Surfshark

Keep the same source, time window and eligible shared VPN exits. Read missing-metric notices before interpreting a lead.

Surfshark vs CyberGhost

Keep the same source, time window and eligible shared VPN exits. Read missing-metric notices before interpreting a lead.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you choose

Does 15 Mbps guarantee a 4K stream through any VPN?

No. Netflix’s recommendation is a connection-speed reference. Stability, device support, plan, shared household usage and service availability also matter.

Should I choose the highest retention percentage?

Read Mbps too. Retention is relative to the baseline and does not tell you how much capacity is available on its own.

Why can evening playback differ from a benchmark?

Your network, the VPN route and service delivery conditions can differ by time. Use repeated checks near the times you actually watch and keep the reporting window visible.

KEEP EXPLORING

Different activities need different evidence

Gaming

A fast download can finish a game update sooner. It does not tell you whether a match will feel responsive. When you compare a VPN for gaming, start with the delay and consistency of the route you will actually use.

Video calls

On a call, you send as well as receive. A connection that downloads quickly can still struggle to send clear video or keep audio in time. Look at upload capacity and timing together, then test the meeting app on the device you use for work.
